thecomet.net - Arthur Thomson The accolades keep coming for veteran walker Arthur Thomson from Letchworth Garden City.

The Herts Phoenix athlete has been honoured by the European Athletic Association.

He has been voted the Best European Veteran of 2006 at an EVAA committee meeting in Frankfurt.

EVAA president Dieter Massin sent his congratulations to Arthur by email, adding that the committee's decision was a unanimous one.

The two performances that won Arthur the honour were his wins in the 3k and 5k walks at the British Masters championships at Birmingham in July.

His times of 15:15.24 and 26:01.52 eclipsed the previous world records in the over-70 age group by 35 seconds and 54 seconds respectively.Herts 24 - Veteran walker honoured

	SYDNEY - Day 3: Telstra Selection Trials - Luke Adams takes control of the Mens 20km Walk

THE lure of $10,000 for Nathan Deakes' scalp has enticed Australia's No.2 walker Luke Adams to Geelong.

For the first time in four years, Adams will take on the 50km event on December 2 as part of the [OE]Nathan Deakes Race Walking Challenge[base '] which also forms the Telstra Australian Men's 50km Road Walking Championship.

Wizard Geelong are offering $10,000 to any competitor who can beat the local hero around the 25 laps of the historical Cunningham Pier on Geelong[base ']s waterfront.

Adams is by far the best credentialed walker to challenge Deakes, having represented Australian in the 20km walk at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and the IAAF World Championships.

He finished second behind Deakes at this year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and also took the silver medal behind his Australian teammate in Manchester four years earlier.

Adams recently returned from a training stint in America with Deakes and understands the enormous challenge in front of him.

"He is in super shape and I don't think it is the time of the year to be going that quick but if there is a chance to take him, of course, anyone would take that opportunity with that sort of incentive ($10,000)," Adams said.

Craig Barrett announces his retirement

newswire.co.nz - The outstanding walking career of Craig Barrett has come to an end with his announcement today of his retirement from the sport.

Barrett represented New Zealand at three Olympic Games, four Commonwealth Games and six world track and field championships.

His highlight was gaining the silver medal in the 50km walk at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, just reward for Barrett after his well publicised withdrawal from the previous Commonwealth Games walk in Kuala Lumpur due to dehydration.

Barrett's best placing at the world championships was seventh in 1999 in Seville. According to the Waikato times, Barrett is to marry his partner Christine next year and plans to re-enrol at university to finish an architecture degree he put on hold in 1996.
