European Athletics – Italian walkers in form at Podebrady

Cold weather and gusting winds meant conditions were far from ideal but there were still excellent wins for the Italian pair of Giorgio Rubino and Sibilla Di Vincenzo at the Poděbrady 2010 meeting on Saturday, the fourth of this year's European Athletics Walking Meetings.

Rubino, 25, who was fourth in the men's 20km Walk at last year's World Championships, fulfilled pre-race predictions that he was the man to watch by going to the front early in the men’s 20km event and never being headed at the 78th edition of the famous Czech walking event.

He went through the halfway point in a fast 40:53 before taking the opportunity to ease up slightly over the second 10km and crossed the line in 1:22.22.

Rubino, the fastest man in the 40-strong field with a personal best of 1:19:37, has only been back in full training for a month after suffering a foot injury at the end of last year. His win will have confirmed his belief that he can be a medal contender at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona this summer.

“I needed to test myself in a race and, I must say, I am very pleased with the result. With just over four weeks work in the legs, I could not have asked for better. Now I´ve got to continue working hard until the IAAF Race Walking World Cup in Chihuahua (Mexico) next month, although the ultimate goal remains the European Athletics Championships. In the short term, I will have a couple more outings: next Sunday over 10km in Rivoli and then 1 May at the Sesto San Giovanni event,” commented Rubino.

Only then, when Talankou began to lag, Trotski and Talashka fought on until the final metres with Trotski was able to pull ahead to win by four seconds.“It was difficult to win today,” Trotski admitted, “as my opponents were seriously ready. That makes it all the more pleasant to win. I hope to develop my success in the next competitions.” In the men’s 35Km, Aliaksandr Kazakou boldly went ahead and led more than half the race all alon. Last year he also moved to the front early but in the last kilometer was overtaken by Andrei Stsepanchuk. This time, the walker from Mogilev successfully completed the work he began to take the first “gold” of his career.

In the women’s 20Km Drabenia and Sniazhana Yurchanka broke from their competitors after six kilometres and marched together almost the same distance, before Drabenia finally broke away to notch a comfortable 26-second victory.

In the junior 10Km races, the victories went to Aleh Sauchanka from the Mogilev region and Marina Kuznyak from the Brest region, clocking 42:03 and 47:42 respectively.
