Parish Walk 2010

For me, the walk went better than expected! Having never walked beyond about 45 miles, it really was unknown territory. I set off at a reasonably fast pace and was surprised in the early and mid stages how I was maintaining my pace and feeling fresh. It wasn’t until I reached Lezayre that I really hit any trouble but at that point, I slowed right down and began to hit problems. However, despite feeling exhausted and with pain in my feet, legs and back, there was not one pain bad enough to make me stop and I knew in my mind that I was going to finish – I’m a bit of a stubborn bugger at times, ask Sally. So I carried on to Maughold at a slow pace and I realised then that I had not passed or been passed by any walker since the top of the Sloc and somewhat unusually for me, there were no female walkers ahead of me. That soon changed as I was overtaken by the leading women and soon there was a spring in my step again as I had some nice derrieres to follow. That got me through to the moon over Laxey Bay and then on to the finish – what a fantastic feeling.

Burton Sport News | Derby Football News & Burton Rugby Club Sports Results | Matthew gets chance to represent England

RACE walker Matthew Redfern is hoping to put his best foot forward for England.

The student at Newhall’s William Allitt School has been chosen for the national team to take part in the Irish National Championships at Tullamore in Co Offally on July 23.

The 12-year-old, from Bretby-on-the- Hill, will be competing in the under-13 category after twice being crowned English champion in his age group. His mum, Emma, said: “This is the first time Matthew has been chosen to represent England — and he’s absolutely thrilled.” Matthew only took up the sport after struggling in a school sports race.

Ms Redfern said: “Matthew used to be a cross country runner, but decided he wanted to do something different after he finished last in one race! “I suggested he should have a go at race walking, and he’s proved fantastic at it.” Matthew was once a member of Burton Athletics Club but joined Nuneaton Harriers, who have a strong race walking tradition.

His mother said: “Nuneaton Harriers are able to provide Matthew with the specialist training and coaching he needs to progress in the sport.“The club’s race walking section is a really strong and good group and moving there has helped him to be number one in England.

“He’s won the national title twice as well as the Midlands championship.” Matthew is hoping he will eventually help to put England back in the elite group of race walking nations.

Don Thompson and Ken Matthews won gold medals for Britain at the Rome and Tokyo Olympics respectively in the 1960s, but in modern times race walking has been dominated mostly by Eastern European athletes.Redfern warms up for his England debut when he competes for Derbyshire in the English Schools’ Championship at Sutton-in-Ashfield tomorrow.

Entries being taken for Whit Walk From Bradford Telegraph and Argus

108th Annual Bradford Whit Walk – the oldest amateur long distance race walk in the world, held continuously since 1903 – will be held on Spring Bank Holiday Monday, May 31.

Last year the event reverted to a closed race, limited to club members and residents of Bradford, the original object of the walk. The traditional route, from Bradford city centre along the main roads through Shipley. Ilkley, Otley and finishing in Peel Park via Leeds/Bradford airport, was deemed too hazardous due to the increased volume of road traffic and the stringent safety regulations.

An alternative course of 35 kilometres, starting and finishing in Baildon and comprising five laps of Baildon Moor, was used last year, which proved to be successful, so the committee have decided to keep the walk alive.Geoff Dowling, president of the Bradford & County Walking Association, the organising body, said: “We will try to keep the walk going as long as we are able.“Most of the country’s long distance race-walks have been victims of the present day traffic conditions and we hope that the comparative traffic free conditions on the Moor will keep this historic walk alive for years to come”.

There will be a 35 kilometre event for long distance specialists and a 15 kilometre race to cater for the shorter distance walkers and ladies, both starting at 11am.Changing facilities will be available at the Baildon Rugby and Cricket Club and the finish will be in the centre of Baildon. The event is again supported by the Bradford Metropololitan Council Sports and Leisure Services bactive campaign and entry forms are available from Race Director Alan Brooks, The Well Springs, 50 Fieldhead, Birstall WF17 9BJ.General information can be had from Geoff Dowling on 01274-490502.
