December 14 – UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) today officially took over responsibility from UK Sport as the National Anti-Doping Organisation for the UK in the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

The new organisation will continue existing testing and education programmes but has a broader remit to include results and intelligence management, including forging closer links with law enforcement agencies, including the UK Border Agency, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Serious Organised Crime Agency, so that the UK can tackle the traffickers and suppliers of prohibited substances.

Andy Parkinson, who has moved from UK Sport to become UKAD’s chief executive, hailed it as one of the most significant days in the fight against drugs in Britain.

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) — Spanish police say they uncovered doping materials in the home of Olympic race walker Francisco Fernandez during raids that led to 11 people being detained.

Spain’s Guardia Civil discovered EPO and growth hormones while raiding clinics, pharmacies and homes linked to former Kelme cycling team doctor Walter Viru, who was among the nine men and two women detained.

[PRESS RELEASE] IOC sanctions five athletes who competed in Beijing

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced sanctions against five athletes who participated in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for having committed anti-doping violations. These five athletes tested positive for mirCERA© (CERA), a third generation of the endurance-enhancing hormone, EPO.

The samples were collected and tested at Games-time and were subject to further analysis earlier this year when a fully validated test to detect CERA became available. Originally, six athletes showed adverse analytical findings in their A samples. However, one athlete was not sanctioned due to the presence of CERA not being detected in her B sample.

All six athletes had the opportunity to be heard by an IOC Disciplinary Commission.

Two of the athletes sanctioned are medallists:

- Rashid Ramzi from Bahrain, gold medallist in the 1500m (athletics) and

- Davide Rebellin from Italy, silver medallist in the individual road race (cycling).

The athlete, Athanasia Tsoumeleka, Greece, Athletics, is disqualified from the Women’s 20km Walk event of the 2008 Olympic Games where she placed 9th;

The International Association of Athletics Federations is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.

The decision shall enter into force immediately.

Banned Russian walkers training for London 2012

Ukrainian walker Andriy Yurin suspended for missed drugs tests

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been informed by the Ukranian Athletic Federation (UAF) that the male athlete, Andriy YURIN, has been found guilty of the following doping violation under IAAF Rules:

3 missed tests within a 60 month period (IAAF Rule 32.2d).

This doping violation relates to missed tests under the IAAF out-of-competition programme which were attempted between May 2007 and May 2008.

In conformity with the IAAF Rules, the UAAF has imposed the following sanction for a first violation:

• 1 year ineligibility (17.02.09 – 16.02.10)

• Disqualification of all results from 24.05.08

Yurin competed in the 2005 World championships 20km, finishing eleventh and also competed in the 2006 Europeans and 2008 World Cup.
